When comparing website hosting in Wexford, start with what your website needs and who will look after each part. The quotation should make the hosting charge, support arrangements and any work involved in a move clear.

Istech offers cloud-based hosting optimised for WordPress, as outlined on our Website Maintenance & Care Plans page. Use the questions below to prepare a brief and confirm the scope before choosing a plan.

In this guide: Domains, hosting and DNS · Access and renewals · Plan questions · Business email · Hosting and maintenance · Planning a move · Comparing quotations · Your hosting brief

1. Understand domains, website hosting and DNS

Your domain name is the address people use to reach your website. Website hosting provides the server environment for the site’s files and database. Business email is another service to identify when reviewing your arrangements.

DNS connects a domain with the services it uses. For example, website and email records have different purposes. Cloudflare’s explanation of DNS provides background if these terms are unfamiliar.

Make a simple list of your domain registrar, DNS provider, website host and email provider. They may be the same company or several different providers. Confirm which of them would change under the proposal.

2. Check account access and renewal responsibilities

Record who can authorise changes, who receives renewal notices and who pays each bill. Make sure the business can reach the right person if a supplier or staff member changes. Arrange access through an agreed secure process.

For a .ie domain, the registry’s frequently asked questions explain how to identify your registrar and renew through them. Keep contact details current and check the registrar’s own renewal terms. Record the renewal date and a named person responsible for following it up.

Our website maintenance responsibilities checklist can help you allocate account and website tasks within your business.

3. Ask what the hosting plan actually covers

For a WordPress site, ask the proposed host or developer to confirm compatibility with your website, plugins and required features. WordPress publishes its current hosting requirements, including supported server software and HTTPS. Check these when the proposal is prepared rather than relying on an old specification.

Ask for clear answers to the following:

  • What storage, resource or usage limits apply, and what happens if they are reached?
  • Are backups included, how often are they taken and how long are they retained?
  • Who can restore a backup, what is covered and is there a separate charge?
  • Who installs and renews the HTTPS certificate and handles any certificate problems?
  • How do you request support, when is it available and what response commitments are agreed?

Match these answers to the website you run. Explain whether it is a brochure site, an online shop or a site with bookings or other connected tools. Our WordPress web design service provides related information when a build or rebuild is also being considered.

4. Confirm business email arrangements separately

Confirm whether business email is part of the proposal or will remain with your current provider. Ask the email provider about the mailboxes, storage, licences, access and support involved. If a move is proposed, agree who will handle existing messages, contacts and devices, and what needs testing.

DNS includes MX records that direct incoming email to mail servers. Cloudflare’s MX record guide explains their role. Before DNS changes, have the responsible provider record the existing email settings and identify any records that must be retained.

Website enquiry forms also need checking. Agree a test with the intended recipient and confirm the message reaches the correct inbox after the move. A form’s confirmation message alone does not establish delivery. Our quote request form planning guide covers the routing and confirmation details to agree.

5. Keep hosting and website maintenance clear

Ask which tasks sit with the host, which are included in technical maintenance and which are separately quoted. Confirm who handles WordPress, theme and plugin updates, backup checks and technical support. Record responsibility for keeping business information current too.

Our technical maintenance is billed yearly. Content work and ongoing SEO are quoted separately, with hosting identified separately in the quotation. Read our Website Maintenance & Care Plans page for the published service details.

6. Agree a plan before moving hosting

For a move that keeps the same public page addresses, Google’s hosting change guidance recommends preparing and testing the new environment, updating DNS, monitoring the change and retaining the old hosting until the move has been verified.

Agree who will make the changes, when they will happen and how problems will be handled. Include a current backup and a way to restore the previous arrangement if needed. For a shop or booking site, agree how new orders or bookings will be handled during the move.

Test pages, images, forms and downloads before and after the change. Check the public site on desktop and mobile, confirm HTTPS works and review temporary development restrictions before launch. Monitor access and errors afterwards. Agree the point at which the old service can be cancelled.

If page addresses or the domain are changing as well, include that work in the scope. Our Website Redesign in Wexford guide covers the related planning questions.

7. Compare the full quotation and renewal costs

Ask for the initial charge, renewal charge, billing period and any applicable taxes to be shown clearly. Identify separate items for hosting, the domain, email, migration work, technical maintenance and any paid software licences.

Also ask about cancellation notice, access to a copy of the website and any charges for restoration or help with a future move. Keep the written scope with your renewal information so the person managing the website can find it.
